• Notes about early Edwards. The original name of Edwards was spelled "Eadwerd" and was pronounced "E add verd" meaning, rich or prosperous guardian. Later, the Edwards name was spelled EDWARDES. The Name EDWARDS means literally "the son of Edward" and is of Anglo-Saxon origin.
The majority of Edwards' that immigrated to the United States came from Wales. Jeremiah Edwards of Greenville SC has traced the Edwards family back to their origin in 1180 in Powys, Wales.
Some of our ancestors came from the "Edwards Hall". This building was located in Glen Morganshire near Cardiff in Wales. It was built around 1050-1100 in the time of William the Conqueror and came into the Edwards Family later by marriage into the family of Queen Elizabeth. Many generations occupied Edwards Hall until it was abandoned in the early 1700's. According to Courtney Brouwer, researcher, nothing remains of this building but a pile of rubble marking it's location in the rough hilly rocky land of this area.
Widely believed, the earliest traceable Edwards in our family line is JOHN EDWARDES, born circa 1450 in England.
