• Notes about life. Shortly after their marriage, Marion's father and stepmother both passed away, leaving three of their children--David, Daniel, and Fanny--to be raised by Marion and Ann. Their household also included N. S. Thompson from Ann's family.
The lives of the Howell family were closely associated with the New Hope Church of Christ, where Marion was an elder for many years, and the names of his eight children and other relatives appear on the baptism and attendance records of the church. One son (Francis Ono Howell) and one grandson (Maurice Howell) were to become well-known preachers of the Church of Christ in the Mid-South area. The New Hope church was the location in 1982 of a gala reunion of Marion and Ann's descendants from throughout the nation.
The Marion Howell family farmed in the New Hope community near Middleton, but for several years they resided in the Essary Springs community so that their older children could attend Southern Tennessee Normal College. In later years, the couple made their home with their daughter, Lizzie Howell Nelms, whose husband, Lester Nelms, was the longtime sheriff and jail superintendent for Hardeman County.
Franklin married Nancy Ann THOMPSON, daughter of B. Hiram THOMPSON and Margaret CALAHAN, on 23 Dec 1877 in Saulsbury, Tennessee. (Nancy Ann THOMPSON was born on 10 Jan 1861 in Saulsbury, Tennessee, died on 9 Sep 1947 in Bolivar, Tennessee and was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Bolivar, Tennessee.)
