Noted events in his life were:
• Fact 1. He was a railroad brakeman and conductor for the Frisco Railroad. He served many years as an Elder of the Hayti Church of Christ.
• Marriage Fact. The Edwards-Howell Wedding By Marvin Howell.
Helen Howell Walker has announced that her wedding to Ray will be on June 3. That date brought back memories for me of another family wedding that occurred on June 3. It was the 1937 wedding of my sister, Marjorie Howell, to Sharon Edwards. They became the parents of four children--and numerous grandchildren--who are on this list. Here are some details about that wedding.
Marjorie chose June 3 for her wedding that year for a special reason: King Edward VIII and Wallis Warfield Simpson were going to be married that day. Marjorie thought it would be fun to be married on the same day that this famous couple was getting married in England. All the world was watching the wedding of Edward, who had just abdicated the English throne so he could married an American commoner. They were later know as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
Marjorie and Sharon's evening wedding was at our family home in Manila, Arkansas. Her brother, Maurice Howell, had been preaching a few years, so they asked him to perform the ceremony. Later, Maurice and Sharon had a running joke with Maurice frequently dunning Sharon for having performed the ceremony, and Sharon declaring that a groom didn't have to pay when the minister is the bride's brother. (I think Sharon probably paid him, but they enjoyed carrying on for years about this bill.)
Marjorie's maid of honor was Florence Dinsmore from Harding, who had been her special friend--and was also a girlfriend of Maurice at the time. Ezra Howell gave his daughter away, and Vadeene Howell stood with Florence. Marjorie believed in working her whole family into the act. Guess who sang! Marjorie thought her 10-year-old brother could sing well, so I was elected to sing a mushy wedding song. When told that I had to sing, I wanted to sing my favorite swing tune of the day, "The Love Bug Will Bite You If You Don't Watch Out," but Marjorie vetoed that idea. So I reluctantly sang "I Love You Truly" to Lucille Curtwright's accompaniment on the piano. William Edwards (no kin) was Sharon's best man.
I cried at my sister's wedding. I adored my big sister and didn't really want her to go away with Sharon Edwards! In 1951, she returned the favor and cried at my wedding in Dyersburg, Tenn.
Garth married Mavis Marjorie HOWELL, daughter of Franklin Ezra HOWELL and Vada Vadeene ESSARY, on 3 Jun 1937 in Manila, Mississippi County, Arkansas. (Mavis Marjorie HOWELL was born on 4 Sep 1915 in Essary Springs, Tennessee, died on 27 Feb 1995 in Searcy, White County, Arkansas and was buried on 1 Mar 1995 in Oaklawn Cemetery, White County, AR.)
